섹션 4. 그릇에서 예술로

이 섹션에서는 현대미술의 거장 파블로 피카소와 현대도예의 아버지라 불리는 피터 볼코스의 작품을 선보인다. 

피카소는 도자기의 비예측성과 형태에 매료되어 직접 도자기를 만들고 그림을 그렸다. 파블로 피카소는 회화와 

조각작품 이외에도 자유롭고 다양한 표현이 담긴 도자기 작품을 제작했다. 1947년 프랑스 남부의 도자기 도시인 

발로리스(Vallauris)에서 도예를 시작해 그 지역의 마두라(Madoura)도자기 공방에서 약 25년간 작품을 만들었다.

그가 만든 도예 작품은 대략 600점, 약 4,000피스 정도로 알려져 있으며, 원하는 모양으로 도자기를 직접 만들어 

그 위에 그림을 그리는 방식으로 제작했다. 초기에는 접시가 컵과 같은 실용적인 도자기 위에 그림을 그렸으나, 

이후에는 접시 외에 화병, 주전자 등을 변형시켜 그림과 연계된 이미지로 작업하기도 했다. 그리스 신화의 형상과 

올빼미나 물고기 같은 동물모양, 자연풍경, 얼굴모양 등 창조적인 주제가 등장한다. 피카소의 도예작품은 그가 

만든 원본 작품이 있고, 이를 원판으로 하여 마두라 공방에서 작품마다 50~500점의 에디션을 만들었던 마두라 

콜렉션이 있다. 이처럼 전통적인 도자기의 개념을 벗어난 피카소의 드로잉은 현대 도예의 선구자인 피터 볼코스에게 

큰 영향을 주었으며, 피터 볼코스는 도자에 추상표현주의라는 새로운 개념을 도입 하며 실험적인 작품을 창작했다. 

이들의 작업은 도자기가 예술로 승화되는 계기를 마련했다.

Section 4. From Vessels to Art

This section presents works of Pablo Picasso and Peter Voulkos, the father of contemporary ceramic art. 

Picasso was fascinated by the unpredictability and shapes of pottery and produced pottery pieces and 

painted on them. In addition to paintings and sculptures, Picasso produced ceramic works containing 

various free expressions. He started ceramic art in Vallauris, a city in southern France famed for ceramics,

in 1947 and produced works at the Madoura pottery studio in the region for almost 25 years. 

He is known to have made about 600 ceramic works, or about 4,000 pieces, and his production style 

was to make pottery in the shapes desired by him and paint on them. During the early days of his ceramic 

work, he painted on practical pottery, such as plates and cups, but thereafter, he modified vases and 

teapots besides plates to create images connected with the paintings. In his works, creative themes, 

such as figures from Greek mythology, animal shapes like owls and fish, natural scenery and facial 

shapes, appear. Picasso's ceramic works include his original works and the Madoura collection,

 in which editions of 50-500 pieces of each work were made in the Madoura studio based on those 

original works. Picasso's drawings escaping from the concept of original pottery greatly influenced 

Peter Voulkos, the pioneer of contemporary ceramics, who adopted a new concept of abstract 

expressionism to ceramics to create experimental works. Their work provided an opportunity for 

pottery to be sublimated to art.
